Our region is currently experiencing an outbreak in a canine respiratory disease complex. Depending on which source you read you may see some of the various terms listed below. The thing to know is that it is highly contagious and can lead to pneumonia. Please arm yourself with information about the outbreak by speaking with your own vet. Terminology you may see:
Canine Respiratory Disease Complex
Canine Respiratory Illness
CIV (Canine Influenza Virus)
CIRD (Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease)
H3N2 variant of the canine influenza virus
What to watch for? The symptoms can be a loud, hacking cough or retch. Sometimes this cough can sound like a “goose honk.” Other symptoms can include runny eyes and nose, wheezing, and sneezing. If your dog seems depressed, lethargic, or isn’t interested in eating that can also be a sign that they aren’t feeling well.
