Johnny – Adopted 3/2023

JOHNNY – Adopted

Neutered, male Golden Retriever.  7.5 years old. DOB 8/8/2015.  Intake Date 2/23/2023.  Johnny is a sweet, laid back guy but also likes to play.

Behaviors to note
Johnny’s previous owner said he liked to climb her fence and escape.  The foster has not seen this behavior but he should always be supervised in the yard.  Also, Johnny will bark to alert you about people and dogs at the door or in the yard.  See more information from the foster below…

Foster Questions:

1)       What is your foster dog’s activity level (energetic, playful, likes to fetch or play tug, mild-mannered, quiet, etc.)?

Johnny Cash is a very laid back, quiet guy but also likes to play. He loves to wrestle and romp with our dog and it just starting to play with toys. He has the typical golden trait where they like to have something in their mouth… be it a sock or a shirt or a towel he finds on the floor.

2)       Is he/she reliably housebroken? If no, what’s the problem?

He is house broken. He did have one pee accident in our house but it was after his neuter surgery. He will sit by the door and even grumble to be let out.

3)       What obedience commands does the dog seem to know and follow?

He definitely could use some training but he will respond to “Johnny here” in the back yard and come when called. He can sit.  He is mindful when you tell him to stay if the door is open but I wouldn’t trust him to not dart out the door. We are working on “Gentle” because he takes treats abruptly so watch your fingers! But it’s not in a mean way, more excited.

4)       How is your foster dog with other dogs?

He is great! He loves our 1.5 year old golden and doesn’t pay our older dog much attention (she sticks to herself anyway).  He is the alpha dog! He will take their food if he finishes before them, so I always pay attention at meal time. He will take a treat from our older dog who likes to savor hers first (she is actually our alpha dog). There hasn’t been a fight but Johnny will not back down.

5)       How is he/she with cats?

We don’t have a cat… but we do have a small chicken cooped currently only one chicken and he REALLY wants to chase it. He will sit and stare at her in the coop.

6)       How is he/she with children?

He LOVES our kids, but I don’t think he would be a good fit for a family with toddlers or small kids who walk around with food. He is very interested in food and will beg and counter surf. My kids know to sit at the table when they have food because Johnny will try to take it from them. He does listen when they say “Johnny NO!” But if he did take something from a child’s hand, it would not be very gently.

7)     How is your foster dog on a leash?
Not good, he pulls and is all over the place. Would definitely benefit from some more training.

8)     How does he/she ride in the car (getting in and out, while traveling)?
LOVES the car! Just say the word and he’s ready for a ride!

9)     How is he/she in a crate?
He is good in the crate! I crate him at night but he can be left out if I run errands. I gate off the stairs and he lays by the door waiting. He can act like he hates the crate because he will turn into a lead weight if you tell him it’s time to get in it. But once you get him in he’s fine. He will even lay willingly in it if the door is open for him. He’s good at making you feel bad for putting him in it but he really likes it.

10)  What does your foster dog seem to enjoy/like most?
He loves to cuddle and be with you. He is a dog for the people. He demands pets and will “ask” for more with a gentle paw poke. But lounging around and sleeping are high on the list.

11)  What negative behaviors have you observed (e.g. separation anxiety, begging, jumping)?
He is a barker! People or dogs walk by you will be alerted. Mailman or Amazon deliveries are his nemesis lol. He will bark in the backyard as well if people or pets pass by. He will beg for food but can be guided not too. We only had one instance where he tried to climb our retaining wall/fence and he listened when we yelled STOP. Johnny’s previous owner said he climbed the fence but we have not seen this and we make sure that we are always in the yard with him.

12)  How does your foster dog react to thunderstorms, fireworks, loud noises?
Not sure about Thunderstorms or fireworks but he will sometimes bark if there is a loud noise…more so to alert you than from being scared.

13)  What else can you share about your foster dog that would be helpful in our search for his/her forever home?
Johnny is a really sweet, quiet, love bug. I think he would do great with a family that has kids in elementary School and up because he really loves kids….and people in general. He might not be your hiking partner but enjoys a walk even if he’s not great on a leash. His quiet nature makes up for his lack of training but he’s a quick learner and loves to please you!

14)  Please share any cute things your foster does, or any funny stories!
Johnny REALLY loves food! He knows where the treat jar is and when its mealtime he does a happy dance! He will do it by the treat jar when he comes inside too. He will give you a little “rooorooo” grumble and his front paws start jumping!  He also loves to be in bed or on a couch with you and just melts…don’t ask him to move because he will give you the saddest puppy dog eyes and I swear he smiles lol. He will sleep with you if you let him.
