Find out how to adopt a pet

How do I adopt a dog?

The first step is to read, meet, and agree to the GRRCC Adoption Requirements below. The next step is to fill out a GRRCC Adoption Application. There is a $37 non-refundable application fee. If your application is matched with an available dog these 3 things happen next:

1. Background Vet Check: We will contact your vet to make certain that animals you currently own, or have owned in the past, are spayed/neutered; kept up to date on vaccines; are using heartworm preventative. Please call your vet to allow us permission to have this discussion with them.
2. Phone Interview
3. Home Visit: A GRRCC volunteer will visit your home to meet all members of your family, pets included.

Are there any adoption requirements?

Minimum Age Requirements: Be at least 21 years of age and live independently

Experience: Demonstrate the ability and commitment to provide proper care, exercise, and training for the lifetime of a large dog

Fence Requirements: Have a fenced-in yard large enough to safely exercise the dog. Applicants such as apartment or condo dwellers who do not have yards may apply for an exemption from this requirement unless it is specifically stated in the dog’s biography that a fence is mandatory. At the discretion of the GRRCC adoption team, appropriate senior (age eight and older) or special needs Goldens may be placed in unfenced homes. We rarely place dogs in homes with underground or ‘invisible fences’ and never in homes with ‘radio fences’.  If an invisible fence is to be considered, it must be professionally purchased and installed and have battery back-up.

Availability: If applying to adopt a dog under the age of 3-4 years old, there must be an adult home at times during the day, so the dog is not left alone more than 3-4 hours total on an average day

Responsibility: Agree that the dog will never be left in the yard when no one is home, regardless of the type of fencing or shelter provided.  Agree the dog will be given back to GRRCC for any reason if the dog cannot be kept in adopters home.

Family Life: Generally, we do not place a dog in a home with a child under the age of 8 years old. Exceptions can be entertained if we have known background on a dog and know that they are proven to be good with children.

What are the adoption fees?

Puppies (0 – 2 years): $460

Adult Dogs (2 – 8 years): $410

Adult Dogs (8 – 10 years): $225

Senior Dogs (10 years +): A donation is greatly appreciated

Are the dogs healthy?

All available dogs have been medically cleared for adoption including:

  • Spay/Neuter
  • All Current Vaccinations
