Comet’s resume has some gaps in it but here is what we
have pieced together. He was a Katrina victim as a puppy that somehow
found his way north. We don’t know what his story was for the next 2 years
but we do know he was adopted a year ago from a South Carolina rescue
group. The people that adopted him are having their first child and didn’t
feel they had time for three dogs (they already had two when the adopted
Comet). Since he was the youngest and had the least ‘seniority’, Comet
drew the short straw so to speak and his owners contacted us to help him
get a new home.
Comet has been an absolute delight in his foster home.
He gets along great with his Golden foster sister, is totally housetrained
and typical Golden, loves to be with his people. Comet appears to have a
little something else in his Cajun background since he has a bit more
white than normal on his chest and he also has rear dew claws. However,
his personality and temperament are as Golden as they come and he is
simply a splendid, loving (and loveable) companion.
Comet has some allergy issues, but as you can see from
his pictures, they are very controllable since both he and his coat are
gorgeous! He will need to be on Hydroxoyzine (antihistamine) and be fed a
premium dog food which has a protein source than beef (ideally duck or
fish). The Hydroxozine costs approximately $20 per month and the dog food,
although a bit more expensive than some of the better known brands does
not need to be purchased at a veterinarian’s office. Timberwolf, Fromm,
Blue Buffalo and several others manufacture fish and duck based dry food
that are readily available at several pet stores in the area.
Comet would benefit from some basic training as he has
sort of non-existent leash manners and his ‘recall’ could also use some
work….currently he is more inclined to come when he is called when it is
his idea, and not necessarily when it is his foster mom’s idea! Both these
are very trainable behaviors and some basic obedience will allow this
sweet boy to bond even more quickly with his Forever Family. Although he
is unknown around kitties, he gets along wonderfully with his Golden
foster sister and also with the female lab and male Westie at his previous
home. He has not yet been around young children but there is not reason to
think he wouldn’t be absolutely awesome with them since he is very gentle
by nature and does not jump on people or ‘carry on’ like a goof-ball!. His
foster mom will be kid-testing him on some family members soon and we’ll
have a definitive answer shortly.
►have a structurally fenced yard
►be one where an adult is home the majority of the day
(so he is not left alone more than 2-3 hours at a time).
►He would also love to have a doggie buddy to play with
– probably a large breed female or submissive male
Comet is just a wonderful, sweet boy that wants to put
his days as a vagabond behind him and cuddle up contentedly on the sofa
with his new ( and this time FINAL) Forever family.
FOSTER UPDATE - 9/2/2008
(new pictures too!)
His allergies are MUCH better with the short course of
steroids he is on and he continues to make himself one of the family He
just loves all the attention...now I can see how he might have gotten
pushed aside or ignored with the other dogs in his previous home. He's now
acting like a true Golden...his tail is waging all the time...he appears
happier every day. He wiggles and whines with excitement when you come
home--something he didn't do for several weeks. The only problem he has
(and it really isn’t a problem, more just sort of amusing- for us that is,
not for him!) is when it's raining. If one drop of rain falls from the sky
while he's outside he comes running for the house like his tail is on
fire. It's the funniest thing. Poor baby -I guess it gives him flash backs
from Katrina. Thunder and lightening don't have any affect on him and he
doesn't mind the rain so long as he's inside :)...go figure...I guess we
all have our little idiosyncrasies!
Also, as to cats….He hasn’t been exposed to any and I
certainly don't want to speak ill of my sweet Comet but knowing him it
could be ‘interesting’. He could really surprise me and be fine (although
I certainly have my doubts based on how he is with other furry things that
run from him). Maybe if the cat has a lot of gumption it might intimidate
him...but I don't want to be around to watch it! J
FOSTER HOME UPDATE (8/10)
I took him to our lake house this weekend to see how he
was with water but honestly, he didn't seem much interested. He'd get in
up to his chest then get out. He of course wouldn't swim and retrieve
anything because he just doesn't see the need too J
He did mind me very well when he would start to wonder off. I was told he
was a flight risk and he always came back when I called him. He was not
fond of our friend’s large breed male dog that was at our lake house
visiting. Even though he lived with a small breed male in his original
home, the big boys just aren’t his ‘cup of tea’.. He would do fine as an
only dog or with a female since he loves my female golden (and vice versa)
My daughter likes to go running/jogging with him because he leads and
keeps up a good pace...walking is another story...he still needs work as
he doesn’t seem to quite grasp the concept of walking along the curb and
does tend to weave and pull. Nothing some training and continued work
can’t fix…
He does like his furniture time…he definitely makes
himself at home on any of our beds. I haven't seen him get on the couch
but he does like my window box seat since he can look outside while
sitting there. He probably could be trained to lay on a dog bed but I'm
sure he'd sneak up on a human bed while home alone...that's part of the
genetic makeup of a golden. Also, he did marvelously with my niece and
nephew (ages 3 & 6). They played with him, kissed him, unintentionally
fell on him, dressed him up, played with his toys etc. and all Comet did
was lick them!
July 29th:
He is true to the "Golden" part of his name, meaning he
is just as sweet as he can be...but the "retriever" part has yet to be
seen....you can throw something all day long and he might go for it once
and certainly never bring it back. He loves to play with my Golden,
Bailey's soft toys (stuffed animals) and does no harm to them...he likes
chewing on rubbery toys but has chewed off portions so I really have to
watch him. This coming week is when I'll have small family members
here....ages 6 and 3 so I'll see then how he does. I can't imagine he'd be
anything but sweet. He has made himself at home and this weekend I'll have
him up at the lake.... He is truly an awesome dog...he doesn't jump on
you, doesn't beg, likes to go on walks, does enjoy being on the furniture,
is a "bed hog" during the night, and is totally housebroken. So far he's
been the only dog the Bailey doesn't seem to mind having around and you
can't get a better endorsement then that
July 26th:
Just an update on Comet...he's doing great. He has
settled in and just loves all the attention he's getting. He and Bailey
play and wrestle till they wear each other out...seriously. He showed no
fear from the thunder and lightening storm we had the other night. I will
have a house full of family this coming week so I'll see how he does with
little people.
July 24th:
Just wanted to send some pictures of Comet so you all
can get him up and adopted. He did well over night and today. Poor thing
though just walks around whining, looking for something familiar...it just
breaks my heart to listen to him. He's very playful, friendly and cuddly.
He makes himself right at home by laying on the couch and sleeping on the
bed with my daughter all night. Sweet, sweet dog….
